I'm Paddy Screech and one of the
0:09
founders of Word on the Water the London
0:12
book barge
on a
0:14
Dutch
from
that's been
0:18
running in London for about nine years
0:21
now.
much
possible we tried to have
0:24
books that we've read. So loosely it's
0:25
,
0:27
cult literature, good recently published
0:31
contemporary literary fiction
0:34
interesting
and a wide range
0:37
of funky children's books, so we want to
0:39
be a good English literary
. When
0:42
we
the bookshop we had
0:45
to run a bookshop
0:46
leave every two weeks and
up
0:49
somewhere else and sort of pop
in
0:50
another part of London and
I hadn't
0:53
been for social media we'd have had no
0:55
one
really there's
0:57
three of us trying to share the tiny
1:00
profits
from running a
1:02
bookshop that can only have about a
1:03
tenth of the books that a normal
1:05
bookshop can help. And so we
1:08
basically but we
1:10
saying help we're going to have to close
1:14
the bookshop because we can't find a
1:15
for it; the canal and
1:17
River Trust is unable to offer us a
1:19
mooring. And a
the
1:22
tweet and suddenly the Canal River Trust were
1:25
being
emails from all
1:27
over the world in support of our little
1:30
bookshop the pressure sort of built
1:31
until eventually the Canal and River
1:33
Trust caved and asked us in for a meeting
1:35
and
anywhere in
1:39
London where we want it the mooring, and we
1:41
said could we go here this lovely
1:42
exciting estate that's been being
1:44
developed here and
Granary Square just
1:46
Kings Cross people are very
1:48
friendly
in London
1:49
they're like little sort of arteries of
1:51
the countryside and sort of running
1:53
through the city and people behave as if
1:55
it's the country you've got this village
1:57
of 2,000 people and so you
2:00
a sort of gossipy community that you
2:03
don't...It was quite
in a big
2:05
city. there's
and vintage
2:08
clothes shops and
2:09
we're parked next to a lovely barber at
2:12
the moment who does haircuts and just
2:14
there's been a real sort of
2:17
of this sort of culture on the canals in
2:19
the last four or five years canals of
2:22
London are very interesting they're very
2:23
alive
2:24
it's very
way of living we all
2:26
live on
panels this entire boat
2:28
including the vast sort of PA music
2:31
stage on the river all just
2:32
yesterday sunshine
